Transportation
We traveled to Kauai from Maui by airplane. The plane seated four people and had propellers but it was very cool. We also rented a car on Kauai. We splurged and got a convertible, red Mustang. It was awesome! It is definitely easy to get around Kauai. One day we drove around one side of the island and the next day we drove around the other side. It was nice being able to stop anywhere we wanted and take pictures.
Accommodations
We stayed at the beautiful Kauai Marriott Resort which is right on the beach. The pool is in the shape of a hibiscus! It is so big you do not feel crowded at all. The resort is within walking distance of a few restaurants and stores. Duke’s is just a short walk down the beach so of course, you have to go! The resort also has good restaurants and we ate there for breakfast almost every day. We had a room that overlooked the pool so we could see the ocean also. This is also close to where the Norwegian cruise ship, Pride of America, docks so you can watch it sail in and out.
Food, food and more food
With Duke’s being so close to the resort, we had to go and get Hula Pie. It was so nice to just walk down the beach and get our favorite dessert. There are a lot of local restaurants on the island so you have lots of choices. Every place we stopped was exceptional whether it was a stop for some Hawaiian Ice or some chocolate macadamia nut ice cream.
We wanted to do another luau and The Smith Family Luau on Kauai was highly recommended. Who can resist a great luau which, of course, includes a pig roast? The grounds were so stunning! There were lakes, flowers and beautiful birds everywhere. They have a lot of weddings there also.
The show is a very big production with fire dancers and hula dancers. It also tells the history of Hawaii through song and dance. All the seats are great so don’t worry that you won’t be able to see.
If you love coffee, you need to stop at Kauai Coffee Company. They have free samples and beautiful grounds that you can roam. There are lots of different varieties to try, but we recommend that you add the Peaberry to your sample list. They also have a cute, little store where you can get some great souvenirs. When you get back home, you can order from their website.
Events
We drove up one side of the island one day and found some great places to stop. There were waterfalls, water spouts, a tree tunnel and beautiful beaches. It was so nice to go at our own pace and stop whenever we wanted. If you remember the show Fantasy Island, then you’ll recognize Wailua Falls.
One of the must-sees on Kauai is Waimea Canyon. It’s like the Grand Canyon but with green trees. It’s a pretty good drive to get up there but totally worth it. There are a few different places where you can overlook the canyon so make sure you stop at them all.
If you keep driving up the road from Waimea Canyon, you will come to the end of road at Napali Coast where there is an amazing overlook. Make sure you take the drive up because you will not be disappointed!
No trip to Kauai is complete without a boat ride up the Napali Coast. We saw dolphins and sharks and when we took the cruise in December, we saw a bunch of whales also. The guides will show you where movies were filmed and it feels like you are in the movie.
